Dana K. McDaniel Cancel serves as the Lead Supervised Exercise Trainer at Performance Sport Care, where she helps patients carry out the individualized strength and rehabilitation programs Dr. Cancel develops.

The clinical role

Working under Dr. Cancel’s direct, on-site clinical supervision, Dana translates each patient’s prescribed exercise plan into careful, hands-on coaching in the strength rehabilitation facility. Her role is not independent personal training: every patient she works with has first been clinically evaluated by Dr. Cancel, and every program she implements follows his diagnosis, clinical findings, and rehabilitation plan. Dr. Cancel is present in the facility throughout these sessions, conducting many himself.

For more than twelve years, Dana has been a consistent presence on the gym floor. She observes movement under load, refines technique, reinforces proper cues, and monitors how each patient responds as their program progresses — ensuring prescribed exercise is performed with precision, consistency, and respect for each patient’s current tolerance.

Clinical documentation and the patient record

A defining part of Dana’s role is the training record she maintains for each patient. Session by session, she documents exercise performance, progress, pain complaints, and challenges under load. Those records are reviewed by Dr. Cancel and become part of the patient’s electronic health record, alongside examination findings, treatment notes, and rehabilitation plans — keeping rehabilitation decisions grounded in what the patient is actually doing and experiencing over time, not guesswork or generic progression.

Background in competitive physique sport

Dana’s coaching is also shaped by her own years as a competitive athlete. A national-level Women’s Physique competitor, she earned a 3rd-place finish at the Arnold Classic Europe in Barcelona, Spain — one of the most respected stages in physique sport. High-level training and competition gave her a practical feel for strength development, fatigue, recovery, technique breakdown, and how much the small details matter under load.

That experience matters in a rehabilitation setting. Dana knows how training feels from the inside — but she also knows that clinical exercise isn’t about working harder; it’s about the right work, done the right way, at the right time, under a clinician’s direction.

Why it matters for patients

At Performance Sport Care, Dana’s role reflects the clinic’s integrated model: diagnosis-guided rehabilitation, on-site clinical supervision, precise coaching, and careful documentation throughout the course of care. For patients, that means their strengthening work is never left to chance — it’s coached, observed, recorded, and connected to the clinical reasoning behind their care.
