The ankle is the most frequently injured part of the basketball player”s anatomy, with the acute sprain of the lateral compartment ligaments being the most common injury. Other regions involved (in decreasing frequency) based upon epidemiologic data from various age and skill levels, along with geographic locations are the knee, hand/wrist/forearm, head/face/neck, back, hip/thigh, shoulder, and elbow. Ankle injuries account for 50% of basketball injuries. The nature of the sport, including the emphasis on running with frequent, sudden accelerations and decelerations, sharp cutting, pivoting, lateral movement, and jumping, often in cramped quarters, predispose the athlete to ligamentous and bony injury to this susceptible joint.
